Our Story

In 2004, Bramblehill’s Healthy Choice was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, as a natural response to growing demand. We recognized the need for a dedicated focus on natural pet nutrition and launched the brand as a division of Johnston’s Butcher Shop. For over 30 years, Johnston’s had been producing dog food and treats as part of regular operations. However, as more and more customers sought out high-quality, nutritious food for their pets, we realized there was an opportunity to create something special, and Bramblehill’s was created to fill that need.

Bramblehill’s offers holistic raw dog food based on the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet, designed to optimize pets’ health and longevity. As a family-owned company, the name Bramblehill’s holds personal meaning. It originates from Penelope Ball, our matriarch and a passionate Labrador breeder. She ran Bramblehill’s Kennel on the bramble-covered hills of Chilliwack, B.C. where her love for animals inspired the original recipes that have shaped our product today.

In the 1970s, Penelope developed these early recipes for her dogs, using beef bone meal and meat trim from Johnston’s Abattoir. Building on her work, we perfected the recipes, staying true to the principles of the BARF diet. By carefully blending quality meats, vegetables, and fruits, we crafted wholesome, nutritious foods that reflect both our family’s values and our commitment to providing pets with the best possible diet. Bramblehill’s remains rooted in this legacy, dedicated to nourishing pets with care, quality, and tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BARF diet?

The Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet is designed to mimic what dogs would eat in the wild. It emphasizes raw meat, bones, and fresh vegetables and fruits, providing a balanced and natural diet that promotes optimal health.

How do I transition my dog to a raw diet?

Transitioning to a raw diet should be done gradually to ensure your dog’s digestive system adjusts smoothly. Start by mixing a small amount of raw food with their current diet and gradually increase the proportion over a week or two.

Is raw feeding safe for my dog?

Yes, raw feeding is safe when done correctly. Our raw dog food is prepared with the highest standards of hygiene and safety in mind. Always handle raw food with care, just as you would with any raw meat, and ensure your dog’s feeding area is clean before and after mealtime. Do not leave raw dog food out for prolonged periods.

Is your food suitable for both small and large breeds?

Absolutely! Just adjust the serving size according to the feeding instructions provided on the packaging. For personalized recommendations, consult your veterinarian to determine the ideal portion for your pet.

How should I store Bramblehill's Dog Food?

Keep the food frozen until you’re ready to use it. Like any raw product, simply defrost before serving. If you keep one pack in the fridge at a time, you’ll have a rotation of food that has defrosted safely and is ready to serve. Keep airtight. While it’s not a big risk, raw meat can turn brown in the fridge if left exposed to oxygen.

Why choose raw over kibble?

A raw diet is considered the most biologically appropriate option for dogs, which are naturally carnivorous. Dogs have physical traits suited for a carnivorous diet, including a short digestive tract, sharp teeth, and highly acidic stomachs. Unlike kibble, raw food is free from unnecessary carbohydrates and better aligns with your pet’s nutritional needs.

What are the benefits of a raw food diet for dogs?

A raw diet can provide numerous health benefits, including:

  • Natural allergy relief
  • Softer, shinier coats
  • Stronger, cleaner teeth and gums
  • Enhanced cognition and alertness
  • Improved weight management
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Smaller, less odorous stools
  • Increased hydration
  • Better digestive health
Is kibble harmful to dogs?

Kibble can pose health risks due to its high carbohydrate content, preservatives, low moisture, and the use of low-quality ingredients. The high-temperature extrusion process can also reduce its nutritional value.

My raw dog food is brown, did it go bad?

Browning or darkening of the meat is a natural result of exposure to oxygen, known as oxidation. This often begins during the manufacturing process. As long as the food has been stored properly, a change in colour does not indicate spoilage. However, if you notice an unusual odour or texture, it’s best to consult your veterinarian.
